Hyouhen - GWJ #25

Forget chess. Hyouhen is a strategy board game with a twist: not only the pieces move, but also they can change color - and when they do, the entire board transforms into another one!

Submission for Godot Wild Jam #25: a challenge to make a game in 9 days following the theme: Change Yourself, Change the World. In this game, the optional restriction wildcard was also adopted: Traditionalist - Include a traditional art style.

Features 3 game modes:

• Single player - play against artificial intelligence opponents
• Local Multiplayer - share your mouse or device screen with someone around
• Online Multiplayer - challenge your distant friends (does not work on browser build, have to download the client. This is due to browser limitations)

A bit of making of...

The name Hyouhen is based on the japanese word Hyōhen (豹変), literally "leopard change", an expression meaning a sudden change. It is part of the saying Kunshi ha hyōhen suru (君子は豹変する) meaning "A wise person changes."

The overall game feel was inspired by this picture of a japanese master teaching the game Go:

All the art in the game was made non-digitally. The user interface items, including the board, were made on paper using markers.

The buttons are inspired by japanese Hanafuda cards, but are actually huge 21cm panels!

The board sectors were also painted in cropped pieces from A4 sheets.

The background scenario is based on common objects used as miniatures.

The tea pot is an actual tea pot, but sized for a single cup. The cups are actually stands for boiled eggs. The tray is actually a butter dish base.

All the background music and sound effects were played and recorded in a 3D-printed Shamisen, design also made by me some time ago.
